Brightest Light – Deepest Darkness
“And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to Myself.”
~ John 12:32
Have you ever asked, “what draws people to Jesus”?
Jesus said, “no one comes to me unless the Father draw him.” (John 644). Paul wrote that no one can call Jesus “Lord” except the Spirit move them. (1Cor 13:3)
The role of God’s Spirit is unexplainable. I’m interested in what causes a person to crack open the door of their heart to Jesus. What peaks their interest? What gets their attention? Please note that God’s sovereignty and man’s choice is an important discussion. But, what is our role in making Jesus known to people who need to know Him?
We Are Lifters. When we “lift up” Jesus, He gets all of the attention. He is elevated and exalted. A dear friend of mine recently wrote, “if Jesus draws people to Himself when He is lifted up, then I must to be lifting Him up enough.” Her comments were challenging and convicting. Lifting Jesus to a place of prominence is not just through or words or conversation, but by the convergence of our walk with God and our walk in this life. In our actions and attitudes, He is the priority. How will we lift Him up today?
We Are Loving. Jesus told His disciples, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35) One of the greatest draws to those who don’t know Christ is the love we demonstrate for those who do know Christ. We are royal ambassadors of His reconciling affection. (2 Cor 5:20) Paul reminds us to “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:31-32). How well are we loving others today?
We Are Lights. Matthew records the teaching of Jesus, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16) This has been a convicting principle for me. I have found that I was being light where it was already bright. The brightest light shines in the deepest darkness. Light piercing the darkness. Paul writes, “so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God without blemish though you live in a crooked and perverse society, in which you shine as lights in the world.” (Phil 2:15) How well are we being light in darkness?
Lifting Him up. Loving others. Light in darkness. Jesus described His Church this way, “and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matt 16:18) We are not defensive, holding back the attacks of the enemy. We are on the offense, kicking down doors with devotied love, breaking bonds with bright light, and setting captives free with the elevated and exhaled Savior.
Lift. Love. Light. Let’s make Him known.
