There are days when it’s not easy trusting God.
Schedules are too full. Work is too hard. Pressures are too much. Money is too tight. Needs are too many. Loss is too great.
Fear, failure and fatigue push out whatever faith is there. Days are seemingly spent climbing out of the “valley of the shadow of death” instead of lying down “in green pastures”. (Ps 23) Feelings of anxiety, abandonment and apprehension make it challenging to abide in Jesus. (John 15) Every bucket is empty and there is nothing left to give.
Sarah Young writes, “People tend to think their circumstances determine the quality of their lives. So they pour their energy into trying to control those situations. They feel happy when things are going well, and sad or frustrated when things don’t turn out as they’d hoped.”
The Apostle Paul reminds us that God will meet or supply all of our needs . . . financial, emotional, relational, positional, social, physical . . . “according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” Often, this kind of “trust” requires us to learn, love and lose.
Learning Contentment. Contentment does not come instinctively . . . it only comes through inviting God in and instruction by His Spirit. Contentment is not releasing all of our responsibilities, but resting in His resources. It’s being satisfied in every situation. Paul writes, “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation.” (Phil 4:12)
Loving Confidence. God’s love for us never changes. One of the enemy’s traps quantifies God’s passion based on our performance. God loves because He is love. Our good does not increase His love and our bad does not decrease it. Paul reminds the church in Rome, “But God committed His love to us while we were still sinners and sent Jesus to die for us” (Rom 5:8) And, he emphasizes, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom 8:38–39)
Losing Control. This is the tough one. Give up control. Let go of your expectations and let God exercise His dominion and desires for your life. He cares. He loves. He knows. The wisest man who ever lived wrote, “Trust in The Lord with all your heart. Don’t lean on your own insights or answers. In all your situations, acknowledge His control and He will guide, direct and lead you.” (Prov 3:5-6)
Be encouraged. He will supply . . . He will fill every empty bucket you have.
Learn . . . Love . . . Lose.
