I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes from God, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains.
Psalm 121:1 MSG
God’s compassion and care give us contentment, confidence and courage.
Regarding this psalm, Spurgeon reminded his students, “of the peace of God’s house, and the guardian care of the Lord.” Samuel Eyles Pierce wrote, “every word is calculated to encourage and strengthen our faith and hope in God.” Pasalm 121 is written for those who have lost hope, are hurting and who have been humbled.
These soul searching words shift our eyes from the desperation in the valley to delight on the mountaintop.
He Is My Resilient Strength.
Jehovah told the prophet Isaiah, “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” (Is 41:10 NLT). Spurgeon wrote, “It is wise to look to the strong for strength. Often before the actual ascent the sick and plundered people looked towards the hills and longed to be upon their summits.” Too often, we attempt to stabilize our surroundings with our own stratagies. Finding strength in a familiar surroundings in life is often a false placement of our hope . . . formidable strength comes from a place made by the Creator.
He Is My Reassuring Stability.
The psalmist wrote, “He will not let you stumble; the One who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, He who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.” (Ps 121:3-4 NLT). With every step, He is walking with us. In our sabbaticals, He is ever working. In our sleep, He is always awake and watching. Theologian Albert Barnes reminded us, “Man sleeps; a sentinel may slumber on his post by inattention, by long continued wakefulness, or by weariness; a pilot may slumber at the helm; even a mother may fall asleep by the side of the sick child; but God is never exhausted, is never weary, is never inattentive.” He never closes his eyes to the condition of His people. We are assured of His ever present and all powerful attention.
He Is My Real Security.
The psalmist taught, “The LORD himself watches over you! The LORD stands beside you as your protective shade . . . The LORD keeps you from all harm and watches over your life.” (Ps 121:5, 7 NLT). From the first step to our final step, He guides, He guards and He guarantees our security. Missionary statesman Adoniram Judson wrote, “He has not led me so tenderly thus far to forsake me at the very gate of heaven.”
Billy and Cindy Foote wrote the following lyrics to You Are God Alone describing His uniqueness . . .
“You’re the only God whose power none can contend.
You’re the only God whose name and praise will never end.
You’re the only God who’s worthy of everything we can give.
You are God and that’s just the way it is.
You’re unchangeable, unshakable, unstoppable . . . that’s who You are.”
Today, don’t look to the systems, strategies and significant things we have created to bolster our power, our position or our protection.
Look beyond.
Look to The Creator.
Look to the Cornerstone.
Look to the Chief Shepard.
He made it all.
He alone is our strength.
He alone is our stability.
He alone is our security.
Lift your eyes.
