Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.
Psalms 46:10 NLT
One of Sir Isaac Newton’s Laws of Inertia states, “An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.”
In a physical sense, movement creates greater energy. In a spiritual sense, it may be just the opposite.
Author Brad Williams, in his book, “A Season For Every Purpose” wrote, “Sometimes, God, out of His infinite wisdom and incredible love for us, allows an ‘unbalanced force’ to push us downhill in order to gain momentum.”
God tells us to “cease striving” (NASB) or “be still”. The result is that we will “know that [I am] He is God”.
In a time of constant and immediate information outlets, it may be challenging to find intentional intimacy in our relationships. How many times have we been out with friends or family and most are checking their phone?
God desires that we are still . . . that we rest to renew, refresh, refocus and reconnect with Him. He longs to be our “unbalanced force”.
When I’m Still, I Am Calm.
In every storm He is our calm. Paul reminds us that through prayer, “you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” (Phil 4:7 NLT)
When I Am Still, I Am Clear.
Time with God impacts the way we think. Where there is confusion, He brings clarity. Our thought process and understanding can be suspect, but His is Superior. When we find a stillness of time with Him, we solely trust Him. The wisdom of Solomon encourages us, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.” (Prov 3:5-6 NLT)
When I Am Still, I Am Confident.
The psalmist wrote, “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea.” (Ps 46:1-2 NLT). Moses. Joshua. David. Paul. Jesus. Each one acquired an absolute assurance when being alone with God. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews reminds us that we have the same access, “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” (Heb 4:16 NLT)
When I Am Still, I Am Clutter-Free.
It’s easy to get wrapped up in all of the stuff we need to do. Jesus’ followers struggled with prioritizing “serving” over “sitting”. The physician Luke reminds us, “As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what He taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, ‘Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.’ But the Lord said to her, ‘My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.’” (Luke 10:38-42 NLT). When we are still before Jesus, we discover what’s worthy.
We will continue moving on our own path unless we encounter the “unbalanced Force” of God’s presence, power and purpose.
Be still and experience Him.
