Stone tower with Scottish flag overlooking rugged ocean cliffs

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe. A rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall in his imagination.”

Proverbs 18:10–11 ESV

Where do you run when life feels uncertain?

What do you trust when the pressure builds?

Solomon gives us a vivid contrast between two sources of security: one real, one imagined. One leads to safety. The other is just show.

God’s name is a sanctuary. For the righteous, His name is not a last resort, it’s the lasting refuge.

Run to the Sanctuary, Not a Shadow

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” (v. 10)

This is not poetic allegory, it’s a theological anchor. God’s name represents His character, power, faithfulness, and presence. To run to His name is to trust who He is: Defender, Deliverer, Father, Fortress.

The righteous run, don’t stroll. They run. They don’t waste time. They don’t rely on their reasoning, resources, or reputation. They sprint to the only place that cannot be shaken.

Charles Simeon wrote, “Just in proportion as we are humbled and emptied of self, so shall we be disposed to flee to Christ, and to rely upon Him alone.”

True safety is not the absence of danger, it’s the presence of God.

Expose the False Security of Self-Sufficiency

“A rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall in his imagination.” (v. 11)

Solomon isn’t condemning wealth . . . he’s exposing its limits. The rich man believes he’s safe because of what he owns. His wealth becomes his own “strong city,” his imagined fortress.

It’s not real. It won’t hold. Wealth can’t stop tragedy. It can’t heal a wound. It can’t forgive sin. It may buy time or comfort, but not peace or purpose.

The righteous know that security can’t be stored in a storehouse. It’s found in knowing the name of the Lord.

Shift Your Confidence to What Cannot Be Shaken

In times of crisis, our true refuge is revealed. When relationships strain, finances tighten, or dreams collapse, we instinctively run. Solomon’s question is clear: Will you run to the Tower or the illusion?

The Tower never moves. The Tower never falls. The Tower never denies entry.

Jesus Himself is the fulfillment of this proverb. His name is our peace. His presence is our protection. And when we run to Him, we find not just safety, but rest, hope, and joy.

Hebrews 6:18 says we “have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.”

Run to Christ when you feel exposed.

Trust His name when everything else shakes.

Rest in the One who never fails.

Only one fortress stands when every other shelter gives way and that fortress is the Lord.
