The First Word

Open Bible showing Psalms 24 and 23 beside coffee and glasses

“Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Don’t add to His words, or He will rebuke you, and you will be proved a liar.”

Proverbs 30:5–6 CSB

In a world filled with conflicting messages, changing opinions, and unstable truths, these wise words shine like a lighthouse in a storm.

God’s Word is not only flawless but fiercely protective. It is not something to be edited, reinvented, or enhanced. It is to be trusted, treasured, and obeyed.

The Bible is not just a book; it is the breath of God, pure and powerful, inviting us into safety beneath His shield.

God’s Word Is Flawless and Fully Trustworthy

“Every word of God is pure . . . ” (v. 5a)

This is not poetic exaggeration; it’s a powerful and eternal claim. Every word; not most words, not the ones we prefer, but every word is pure. Free from error, perfectly trustworthy, and always true. God’s Word doesn’t need our approval to be reliable it already is.

In a time where truth is often treated as transcedent, Scripture stands as an unshakable standard. God speaks to clarify, correct, and comfort.

Amy Carmichael wrote, “Never let good books take the place of the Bible. Drink from the well, not from the streams that flow from it.”

If you’re looking for clarity in a chaotic world, don’t reach for opinion. Reach for the only Word that has never failed.

God’s Word Shields Those Who Trust in It

“. . . He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.” (v. 5b)

God doesn’t just speak truth, He shields us with it. His Word is both a sword and a shelter. When the lies of the world, the shame of sin, or the fear of the future try to close in, the person who runs to God’s Word finds refuge.

This is lived experience. The Scriptures have been the shelter for the hurting, the anchor for the drifting, and the fortress for the fearful. His promises are more than poetic; they are protective.

The shield found by taking refuge in Him. We don’t just carry the Bible; we cling to it, trust it, obey it.

God’s Word Must Not Be Twisted or Tamed

“Don’t add to his words, or he will rebuke you, and you will be proved a liar.” (v. 6)

Here is a timely and tested warning . . . don’t tamper with truth. God’s Word doesn’t need enhancement. It doesn’t need our edits, spin, or softening. To add to it . . . by stretching, altering, or ignoring . . . is to deny its purity and place ourselves above its authority.

The moment we elevate our opinion above God’s revelation, we stop trusting and start twisting. When this happens, we’re exposed, corrected, and called to repent.

God’s Word stands on its own. And when we stand under it, we walk in wisdom and grace.

Hold fast to the Word and it will not fail you.

Run to it when life feels unstable and it will shield you.

Honor it by letting it speak for itself and it will guide you.

Every word of God is not only flawless, it is faithful to protect, correct, and restore all who trust in Him.
