Helping Others Get To Where They Want To Go
“Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but One, that is God.”
~Mark 10:18
Many have misinterpetd this comment of Jesus. In this passage, He is not claiming to be God, although He is God, The Son. In fact He is illustrating His humanness by teaching about God’s greatness, goodness, grace and glory. His honors The Father exclusively and while humbly expressing His own divinity.
Jesus was the only person who could claim the adoration and accolades of all creation. Yet, the God-man affirmed all attention to the God-Head.
There is a consistent thread woven throught the life and teaching of Jesus . . . not to recieve glory for himself, but redirect it to The Father. Someone has said, “This divine humility and unbending insistence on God-exaltation is one of the clearest indicators of Jesus’ deity.”
Someone wrote, “If there is one root cause behind every sin, it’s pride.” Every one of us grapples with self-centeredness, self-promotion and self-exaltation. We wrestle with our need for others to speak well and think well of us. We strategize for compliments and admiration. It is in this battle that our perspective is lost and pride wins. Only in reverence to Him do we recognize ourselves.
Only God Recievs Glory. The psalmist writes, “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory, because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth.” (Ps 115:1). In Latin, the phrase Soli Deo gloria has been used by artists like Johann Sebastion Bach, George Fedrick Handle and Christoph Graupner to signify that the work was produced for the sake of praising God. There is no One else Who is Worthy.
Only God Is Great. Over and over, the psalmist proclaims it: “God is great”. (Ps. 48:1; 86:10; 95:3; 145:3). His greatness is complete and no one else compares. His greatness is matchless and no one else measures up. He is unequaled, unrivaled, unparalleled . . . He is the Utmost. “For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods.” (Ps 96:4)
Only God is Good. David writes, “The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.” (Ps 145:9). His goodness provides new life, new meaning, new purpose and new significance. His goodness is partnered with grace. The Measge sheds light on this verse, “God is good to one and all; everything he does is suffused with grace.”
Aaron Shust recorded a song that captures this most captivating thought,
“To God alone be the glory
To God alone be the praise
Everything I say and do
Let it be all for You
The glory is Yours alone
Yours alone.”
Our greatest action, our greatest accomplishments, our greatest achievement is to confess our praise to Him and confirm His glory. It is His alone.
